Will Barclay, a New York State Assemblyman, posted a series of statements on December 15, 2025, addressing the state’s energy policy and economic challenges. Barclay’s comments highlight concerns about the direction of New York’s climate initiatives and their potential impact on residents.
In his first post, Barclay emphasized the necessity of nuclear energy expansion to meet economic demands. He wrote on December 15: “Meeting the ever-growing demands of the modern economy will be almost impossible without the expansion of nuclear energy As NY prepares to take the first steps, I encourage decision makers to consider the Oswego County region for its strategic advantages”.
Later that day, Barclay criticized New York’s climate plan for lacking transparency regarding its financial implications. On December 15 he stated: “Still missing from the state’s aggressive and controversial climate plan is a full cost-benefit analysis to provide New Yorkers the true cost of this misguided energy transition Currently, estimates put the cost at approximately ½ TRILLION dollars”.
Barclay also referenced a recent comptroller report in his third post on December 15. He noted concerns about affordability for young adults in New York: “The recent comptroller report should ring alarm bells in Albany as the next generations are finding the state an unwelcome place to call home Driven by affordability concerns, young adults are finding that other states offer more affordable housing options and opportunities”.
Barclay’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over New York’s climate policies and economic competitiveness. The state has set ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions but faces scrutiny over implementation costs and impacts on residents’ quality of life. Oswego County, which Barclay highlighted for potential nuclear development, is already home to several existing nuclear facilities.
