Campus departments are reminded to register their summer programs involving minors with the Office of Institutional Risk Management. This reminder aligns with the University’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of children under the age of 18 who are non-matriculated students participating in university-related activities.

“The University continues to strengthen its commitment to the safety of minors (children under the age of 18 who are not matriculated University students) who are invited to campus or participating in programs operated, controlled or sponsored by the University,” stated the Office of Institutional Risk Management in its recent announcement.

The University first implemented the safety of minors policy in May 2019 through a decision by the Board of Trustees. According to this policy, all summer programs involving minors must register with the Office of Institutional Risk Management at least 30 days before they commence. The policy is not only applicable to in-person events but also extends to virtual and hybrid formats.

The summer months typically see an increase in youth programming on campus, and the Office is urging departments to adhere to the established registration and reporting protocols during this period. Program organizers with queries are encouraged to reach out to Sarah Cappella, the youth programs compliance coordinator, via email at cappella@syr.edu or to consult the Minors on Campus section on the Risk Management website for further details.
