The Syracuse University women’s volleyball team is preparing for its final match of the 2025 season, facing Virginia Tech on Friday afternoon. The Orange currently hold a 13-16 overall record and are 5-14 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. Virginia Tech enters the contest with an 11-19 overall record and a 3-16 mark in conference matches.
Earlier this season, Syracuse defeated Virginia Tech on the road with a 3-1 victory, winning three consecutive sets after dropping the first. Senior captain Gabby McLaughlin led Syracuse in that match with 21 kills and a .319 hitting percentage. Sydnie Waller contributed 12 kills and three blocks. For Virginia Tech, Payton Woods recorded 16 kills and four blocks.
Friday’s game will be held at the Women’s Building, where Syracuse has posted a 7-8 home record this season, including two wins in nine conference games. The Orange are coming off a straight-set loss to Clemson earlier this week.
Gabby McLaughlin leads Syracuse with 399 kills over 29 matches, ranking sixth among ACC players for total kills this year. Tehya Maeva has provided 941 assists, also placing her sixth in the conference while averaging a career-high of just over nine assists per set. Maeva tallied 31 assists and one service ace against Clemson.
Skylar George stands second on the team with 290 kills and leads in service aces with 30. She has reached double-digit kill totals in eleven ACC matches this season. Sydnie Waller has doubled her previous year’s kill total to reach 153 for the current campaign, highlighted by a season-best performance of fifteen kills against NC State.
Defensively, Syracuse holds opponents to an average .216 hitting percentage—among the top ten in the ACC—and averages more than fourteen digs per set, which ranks fourth in the conference. Rana Yamada leads defensively with 361 digs so far this season.
Virginia Tech as a team posts a .199 hitting percentage but allows opponents to hit .226 against them. The Hokies are strong from the service line, averaging more than one-and-a-half aces per set—the sixth highest rate within the ACC.
This matchup marks the twentieth meeting between Syracuse and Virginia Tech; Syracuse currently leads the series ten games to nine.
