The Syracuse women’s basketball team will host Canisius at the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for Military Appreciation Night. The Orange, who are currently 2-0 this season, recently secured victories against Stony Brook (74-50) and UAlbany (64-45). Those unable to attend in person can stream the game live on ACCNX through the ESPN app.
Graduate student Dominique Darius and freshman Uche Izoje have led Syracuse’s offense so far, each averaging 12.5 points per game. Darius is shooting a team-high 62.5 percent from the field while adding 4.5 rebounds per game. Izoje has made 63.2 percent of her shots, with an average of three rebounds and two blocks per game. In the win over UAlbany, Izoje scored ten consecutive points during the third quarter.
Sophomore Shy Hawkins has contributed off the bench with an average of 9.5 points per game on 61.5 percent shooting. Senior Laila Phelia leads in minutes played at 26.7 per game and averages 7.5 points, three rebounds, and a team-best 2.5 steals per contest.
Through their first two games, Syracuse has averaged a +14.5 rebounding margin with 42.5 rebounds per game compared to opponents’ 28 rebounds per game and forced an average of 23.5 turnovers while recording an average of 13.5 steals each contest.
Canisius enters Tuesday’s matchup seeking its first win after opening losses to Michigan (100-40) and Eastern Michigan (70-39). Sophomore Irene Rey Pineda leads Canisius in scoring at nine points per game and shot a career-high twelve points against Eastern Michigan despite her team converting only seven field goals in that match.
Military Appreciation Day festivities will include recognition of a hometown hero during halftime and free t-shirts for fans while supplies last at Gate B as well as schedule posters and magnets.
