The Syracuse Orange women’s basketball team concluded its season on Mar. 23 after a defeat by the University of Connecticut in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Orange, seeded ninth, lost to top-seeded Connecticut 98-45 in Storrs, ending their campaign with a record of 24 wins and nine losses.
This result marks the end of Syracuse’s run in this year’s tournament and highlights the challenges faced when competing against an undefeated opponent. The Orange trailed early, falling behind 33-8 after the first quarter and were unable to recover as Connecticut maintained control throughout the game.
Uche Izoje led Syracuse with consistent scoring, reaching double figures for the 26th time this season. Laila Phelia also recorded double-digit points for her team for the 24th time during this campaign. Maddy Potts made her second consecutive start, while Olivia Schmitt contributed by hitting a three-pointer during an 11-0 run in the third quarter.
Despite efforts from players like Angelica Velez, Keira Scott, Sophie Burrows, and Thompson—who opened both halves with scores—the Orange could not close the gap against Connecticut’s strong offense and defense. The team scored a total of 20 points in the paint and registered five steals along with three blocks during their final game.
Syracuse finishes its season reflecting on several individual milestones but will look ahead to future opportunities following their exit from this year’s NCAA Tournament.
