The Department of Public Safety (DPS) held a graduation ceremony for the 9th Peace Officer Academy class on August 14 at Drumlins Country Club. The event marked the completion of 22 weeks of training for new recruits.
“Our graduates have shown great discipline and dedication throughout their 22 weeks of training,” said Michael Bunker, associate vice president and chief of DPS. “They now join a department committed to service, professionalism and care for the Syracuse University community.”
Five graduates will join the Syracuse University DPS: Mariyah Byrd, Matthew Calley, Jesus Gorra, Brennan Kreis, and Misty Stephens. Megan Healey will join the Onondaga Community College DPS.
“We are incredibly proud of this graduating class,” said Sgt. Adam Wheeler, academy director. “Over the past 22 weeks, these recruits have demonstrated commitment, discipline and resilience. They are now well-prepared to start field training and learn how to serve our community with professionalism, integrity and compassion from our seasoned officers.”
During the ceremony, badge pinning and certificate presentations took place. Performance-based awards were given to Jesus Gorra, Mariyah Byrd, Matthew Calley, and Megan Healey. Mariyah Byrd was also named valedictorian.
The new officers will begin field training alongside experienced DPS officers as they complete an additional 480 hours required before becoming fully qualified.
DPS is responsible for providing continuous protection to Syracuse University’s campus through patrols and crime prevention initiatives in partnership with students, faculty, and staff.
