The College of Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse University has appointed Professor Jianshun “Jensen” Zhang as the interim department chair of mechanical and aerospace engineering, effective July 1, 2025. Zhang also serves as the executive director of the Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems.

Zhang earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1991. He worked with the National Research Council of Canada for eight years before joining Syracuse University in 1999. His research focuses on built environmental systems, with over 35 years of experience and more than 200 peer-reviewed journal papers to his name.

In addition to his research, Zhang teaches courses related to building energy and environmental systems at both graduate and undergraduate levels. He has mentored numerous Ph.D., M.S. students, and postdoctoral fellows.

Zhang is recognized as a fellow by the International Academy of Indoor Air Science and the American Society for Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers. He holds leadership roles in various professional associations and contributes as an editor to academic journals.

ECS Dean J. Cole Smith remarked on Zhang’s appointment: “Professor Zhang is one of the best respected researchers, educators, and leaders in his field… I am excited to see the innovative actions Professor Zhang will take to move MAE forward.”

Expressing gratitude for his new role, Zhang stated: “I am truly honored… I sincerely thank the faculty, staff, and ECS leadership for their trust and support.” He acknowledged Professor Young Moon’s contributions while looking forward to advancing MAE further.
