The Syracuse Orange softball team split a doubleheader against the University at Buffalo on April 21, dropping the first game 4-0 before securing a 6-2 win in the second contest.
The results mark a key moment for Syracuse (18-20), as they look to build momentum heading into their final road series of the season. The Orange struggled offensively in game one, but rebounded with a strong performance in game two.
In the opening matchup, senior pitcher Madison Knight threw all seven innings and struck out six batters. Despite her efforts, Syracuse was unable to score any runs while Buffalo plated four—one in the first inning, two more in the third, and another in the fifth—to claim victory.
Game two saw Syracuse’s offense come alive during a decisive six-run third inning. Knight doubled to right field to bring Lauren Fox home for the first run. Gabby Lantier scored after Madelyn Lopez singled to right field. Knight then stole home and Lopez later scored on a passed ball. Jadyn Burney added two more runs with a single, pushing Syracuse ahead 6-1.
Julianna Verni pitched a complete game for Syracuse in game two, striking out five batters and allowing only two walks. Defensively, Knight contributed nine putouts at first base while Grace Weaver led with six putouts during game one. Lopez recorded her eighth multi-hit game of the season and Verni achieved her fourth consecutive outing with five or more strikeouts.
Looking ahead, Syracuse will travel to Louisville for its last road Atlantic Coast Conference series from April 24 through April 26. All games are scheduled to be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
