Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has announced the Division of Code Enforcement’s upcoming event, Healthy Housing 101. This annual tour aims to educate residents on maintaining safe and healthy housing conditions in Syracuse. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, at 528 S. Midler Avenue. Tours will be conducted from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., with a break between sessions.
Mayor Walsh stated, “Every year Code Enforcement hosts Healthy Housing 101 to share knowledge and resources about protecting and maintaining homes to help keep residents safe and healthy.” He emphasized the opportunity for community members to engage directly with city staff, inspect a vacant home alongside an inspector for common code violations, and access information about available programs and resources.
The tours will be led by City Code Inspectors through a vacant property owned by the Greater Syracuse Land Bank. Discussions will cover various health and safety issues such as lead hazards, exterior violations like peeling paint or overgrowth, trash management, and interior concerns related to heating, water systems, smoke detectors, among others.
Several community agencies will provide information during the event. These include the Greater Syracuse Land Bank, Onondaga County services, Home HeadQuarters, CNY Lead Testing services, Salvation Army support initiatives, and PEACE Inc.’s programs. Representatives from different city departments including Code Enforcement, Central Permit Office, Zoning Administration, SYRCityline service desk, Fire Prevention unit, Police department services as well as Neighborhood and Business Development office will also be present.
A rain date is set for Friday, June 27. Interested participants can register at goto.syr.gov/healthyhousing.
