The City of Syracuse has issued an emergency demolition order for the Motherhouse structure at the former Franciscan Academy/Maria Regina campus following a devastating fire. The fire, which occurred last Friday, engulfed the building for nearly a full day, leading city officials to designate the structure as a public threat.
Inspections supported by drone footage informed the Syracuse Division of Code Enforcement’s decision, highlighting potential risks to public safety and responders due to the building’s deteriorated state. The Motherhouse, dating back to the early 20th century, stands near the junction of Grant Boulevard and Court Street.
City representatives communicated with the property’s owner, The Kimberly at Grant Boulevard LLC, and Home Leasing, which intends to develop the site. These parties are involved in planning the demolition, ensuring it does not affect the adjoining structures. Home Leasing remains committed to transforming the remaining parts of the campus into affordable senior housing.
“Losing the Motherhouse is a sad outcome for our community,” said Michael Collins, commissioner of Neighborhood and Business Development. “We can take some solace that the repurposing of this remarkable property will go forward.”
The city aims to proceed with the demolition swiftly, pending necessary approvals and finalizing a comprehensive demolition strategy.
