With a multi-day heat wave affecting the region, Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has announced extended hours for cooling centers at two city community centers. The Cecile Community Center and the Magnarelli Community Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning effective today through Wednesday. Governor Hochul declared a State of Emergency for Onondaga County and nine other New York counties.

In addition to the Cecile and Magnarelli centers, residents can find a list of other cooling centers on the New York State Health Department website. These include Onondaga County Public Library branches around the city. Residents are advised to call ahead to confirm hours and availability. Air-conditioned facilities are available for those needing relief from anticipated record-breaking temperatures.

City pools have also opened at several parks, including Upper Onondaga Park, Kirk Park, McKinley Park, Burnet Park, Lincoln Park, and Wilson Park. Pools will operate from 3 to 6 p.m., with McKinley and Burnet Park pools opening early at noon and Wilson Park pool at 1 p.m.

“With temperatures climbing into the dangerous 90s and an Extreme Heat Warning in effect for our region, the safety of Syracuse residents is our top priority,” said Mayor Walsh. “We are opening cooling centers to provide relief for our community members, including seniors, families with young children, and those without access to adequate air conditioning.” He further advised people to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun as much as possible, and check on friends and relatives regularly.

Non-profit agencies serving the homeless report focusing field outreach on wellness checks, distributing water, and encouraging vulnerable individuals to use available indoor shelter services.

Older adults seeking information on Senior Cooling Centers may contact the Onondaga County Office of Adult and Long-Term Care at 315-435-2362. For health emergencies, residents should call 9-1-1.

The City also offers spray features at various parks for additional cooling options. Burnet Park and Sunnycrest Park Golf Courses will be open today and tomorrow from 7 a.m. to noon. All outdoor fitness classes are canceled for today and tomorrow.
