Mayor Ben Walsh of Syracuse has announced two in-person hiring events aimed at addressing immediate staff needs for city operations. The first event, organized by the Department of Water, is scheduled for April 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It will take place at Meachem Ice Rink, located at 121 W. Seneca Turnpike. A second hiring event, a job fair featuring various city departments, will occur on May 12 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Cecile Community Center at 174 W. Seneca Turnpike.

“Bringing these hiring events to community spaces allows candidates to have direct conversations with hiring managers and puts a career with the City in accessible reach,” Mayor Walsh stated.

During the April 29 event, the Department of Water will conduct onsite interviews and may extend offers immediately as part of an expedited hiring process. The department is looking for a watershed inspector, water system construction engineers, and water maintenance workers, with certain roles requiring a commercial driver’s license and driving test. “We want candidates to know we are serious about removing barriers to good careers,” said Commissioner Robert Brandt.

The May 12 job fair will have representatives from several city departments who are interested in meeting potential candidates. The city seeks to fill hundreds of positions, many of them temporary roles for the summer, particularly within the Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Services. Available positions include lifeguards, recreation leaders, special events coordinators, and maintenance workers.

“There are so many seasoned City employees in leadership who got their start here in Parks, it’s a great way to begin a career in the trades or working with the public,” said Syeisha Byrd, Commissioner of Parks, Recreations, and Youth Services.

For those interested in the Parks and Recreation positions, the city requires applicants to be at least 16 years old and to have a work certificate and a government-issued photo ID.

The City of Syracuse also maintains a job listing on Indeed.com, where over 30 job titles currently are posted. Salaries for these positions range from $35,200 to $120,000. Potential applicants must reside in Syracuse, although some exceptions do apply. For more information, candidates can visit syr.gov/jobs.

Prepared candidates are urged to bring multiple copies of their resumes and be ready for interviews. Inquiries about the events can be sent to personnel@syr.gov or addressed via phone at 315-448-8780.
