Mayor Walsh expressed deep sorrow following a shooting outside Onondaga Park pool, which resulted in the death of a teenager. “I’m heartbroken by the shooting this afternoon outside Onondaga Park pool. Losing a teenager with so much life ahead makes this tragedy even more devastating,” Walsh stated. He called for community support for the victim’s family and others affected by the incident.

The Syracuse Police Department is actively investigating the case. Mayor Walsh assured residents that he has full confidence in law enforcement to find and bring the perpetrator to justice. He urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Syracuse Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 315-442-5222.

In response to the incident, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Programs is offering support to staff members who were on duty during the event. These individuals acted swiftly and courageously to ensure everyone’s safety. The reopening date for Onondaga Park pool remains undecided, but there will be an increased police presence around city pools in the coming days and weeks.

Reflecting on his visit to the park after the incident, Mayor Walsh shared his feelings: “As I was leaving the park this afternoon, it made me sad and angry to see an empty pool at a time it should have been filled with activity.” He emphasized that parks are vital refuges for city residents and that this incident would not alter their significance.
