Syracuse University’s men’s basketball team is set to play Georgia Tech on Tuesday, January 6, at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. and be broadcast on the ACC Network.
This matchup marks Syracuse’s first true road game of the season after a stretch of home games at the JMA Wireless Dome. During December, Syracuse played seven home games and achieved a 5-2 record, concluding with a close loss to Clemson, 64-61. The Orange have played four games away from Syracuse so far this season, including three neutral-site contests in Las Vegas and a win over Drexel in Philadelphia.
Sophomore Donnie Freeman returned from injury for the ACC opener against Clemson and scored 18 points in the final minutes of that game. Junior Naithan George has contributed significantly with 70 assists, placing him among the top ten in the ACC for that statistic, and has averaged 16.5 points over his last four games. Senior guard J.J. Starling has posted double-digit scoring nine times since returning from injury and led the team in scoring twice during that span. Senior Nate Kingz leads Syracuse in three-point shooting with 22 made shots from beyond the arc.
Freshmen Kiyan Anthony and Sadiq White Jr. have also been active contributors; Anthony leads the team with 149 total points across 14 games, while White Jr. ranks third on the team with 60 rebounds.
Defensively, Syracuse is holding opponents to an average of 64.8 points per game on under 40 percent shooting from the field. The Orange are ranked second nationally in blocks per game with an average of 7.1 through their first 14 contests. Senior center William Kyle III has recorded 45 blocks—second most in the nation—and leads Syracuse with 112 rebounds.
Georgia Tech enters Tuesday’s contest having won five of its last six games and holds a conference record of one win and one loss. In their most recent outings, Georgia Tech nearly defeated Duke before beating Boston College at home. Kowacie Reeves Jr., Georgia Tech’s leading scorer, had a season-high performance against Duke with 23 points and has been effective from three-point range this year.
Senior guard Lamar Washington recently posted his first double-double of the season against Boston College with 17 points and a season-high twelve rebounds. Freshman center Mouhamed Sylla averages nearly a double-double but missed Georgia Tech’s previous game due to injury.
Georgia Tech head coach Damon Stoudamire is in his third year leading the program and brings experience as both an NBA player and coach.
Syracuse currently holds a slight advantage in their all-time series against Georgia Tech at ten wins to nine losses. Last season, Syracuse won their meeting by a score of 62-55 behind J.J. Starling’s team-leading performance.
