A new street art project has been announced for Martin Luther King Blvd in Syracuse. Designed by fifth-grade students from Dr. King Elementary, the mural aims to highlight themes of excellence, life, laughter, growth, and peace. The initiative is part of an effort to demonstrate how low-cost measures can reduce traffic speeds and enhance road safety.

Mayor Walsh commented on the importance of traffic safety in neighborhood planning. “Improving mobility in neighborhoods requires imagination and comprehensive planning. A key part of that is traffic safety for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. Outside STEAM at Dr. King Elementary is an ideal place for a demonstration project on how projects like street art can calm traffic and make safer streets,” he said.

The street art project is funded through a $500,000 “Reconnecting Communities” planning grant awarded to Syracuse. The grant aims to improve multimodal connections along the east-west corridors on the Southside that have been affected by the Interstate 81 viaduct for over fifty years. Another demonstration project will take place later this summer.

Feedback from these projects will contribute to developing concept plans for five key corridors: Adams Street/Harrison Street, Taylor Street, Martin Luther King Blvd, Colvin Street, and a linear park corridor in the East Adams neighborhood.

Joe Driscoll, City 81 Project Director, emphasized the project’s goals: “A major goal of this project is to build engagement and momentum and to illustrate the benefits of traffic calming measures. We are working to ensure that the post-viaduct southside is safer and more connected than ever before.”
