Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has initiated legal action against Brooklyn landlord Mendy Kletzky, seeking to prohibit him from owning or renting properties in Syracuse. The lawsuit, filed by city attorneys, requests a State Supreme Court judge to permanently bar Kletzky from any involvement with residential or mixed-use properties in the city due to alleged neglect and defiance of directives.
The city's complaint demands that Kletzky rectify all open code violations within 30 days of a court ruling. It also seeks to prevent him from collecting rents and proposes fines ranging from $100 to $500 per day for each unresolved violation. Additionally, the city wants oversight on any potential sale of his properties.
“Mendy Kletzky is a danger to public health and safety and must be barred from owning and renting properties in Syracuse,” stated Mayor Walsh. He accused Kletzky of forcing tenants into unsafe living conditions while evading responsibilities through various limited liability companies.
The complaint highlights how Kletzky used these companies to shield himself from personal liability for most of the properties involved. In previous legal proceedings, he admitted his connection to these entities.
The city's filing emphasizes the need for an injunction against Kletzky's continued property ownership within Syracuse as a measure to protect public welfare.
