The New York State Legislature is considering a new bill named the "Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law," introduced by Assemblyman Robert Smullen. The bill aims to honor victims of fatal vehicle accidents and raise awareness about road safety.
Assemblyman Smullen, representing Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks, proposed this legislation in memory of his son AJ, who died after being struck by a car on February 22, 2024. AJ's resilience was described as inspirational, motivating the creation of this tribute.
The proposed law would allow families and friends to purchase roadway signs commemorating victims of fatal accidents. These signs are intended to remind drivers about safe driving practices while honoring those who have lost their lives. Assemblyman Smullen expressed pride in supporting this bipartisan measure alongside his wife Megan, state officials, and members of both legislative houses.
In addition to the legislative effort, Assemblyman Smullen plans to unveil a sign dedicated to AJ outside Bellevue Woman’s Center on Route 7 near the accident site. This area has been identified as hazardous following another pedestrian fatality shortly after the bill's introduction.
Assemblyman Smullen emphasized that few pieces of legislation receive broad bipartisan support like this proposal. He believes it not only honors those lost but could also prevent future tragedies. He urges his colleagues to consider the bill seriously during this session.
