Audie Klotz, a political science professor at the Maxwell School, has been elected president of the International Studies Association (ISA). The ISA, established in 1959, is an interdisciplinary association with over 7,000 members worldwide. It includes academics, practitioners, policy experts, private sector workers, and independent researchers. The organization serves as a platform for exchanging ideas and networking through conferences and virtual programs.
Klotz will begin her three-year term at the annual convention in March 2025. Her previous roles within the ISA include serving as vice president-elect and vice president from 2016 to 2018.
Shana Kushner Gadarian, associate dean for research and professor of political science at Maxwell School, commended Klotz's election. “Over the course of her career, Professor Klotz has developed a body of scholarship that is well-known and widely cited and that has influenced several distinct areas of research in political science and international studies,” Gadarian stated. She also mentioned that Klotz's new position would create opportunities for Maxwell faculty and students to engage more deeply with international issues.
Klotz specializes in global migration and international norms. Her work has earned her numerous awards such as the 2023 Wasserstrom Prize from Syracuse University and the Distinguished Scholar Awards from different sections of ISA in 2020 and 2018.
She authored "Migration and National Identity in South Africa, 1860-2010" published by Cambridge University Press in 2013. A second edition of her book "Norms in International Relations: The Struggle against Apartheid" will be published by Cornell University Press later this year. Her research has received support from various organizations including a Fulbright fellowship.
