The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is introducing a new master’s degree in music business, building on the success of its well-regarded undergraduate program in the recording and entertainment industries.

Both degree programs are named after Martin Bandier ’62, a notable music publishing executive and University Life Trustee. The Bandier Program for Recording and Entertainment Industries is frequently recognized as one of the leading undergraduate music business programs nationwide.

The new Bandier music business master’s program aims to offer students hands-on experiences, training for advanced skills necessary for immediate employment upon graduation, and access to extensive networks of Bandier and Newhouse alumni.

Billboard magazine has consistently included the Bandier program in its list of top music business schools globally.

“Our goal at the Bandier program has always been to be the premier music business school, offering the most comprehensive and cutting-edge education while forging top-tier industry connections,” said Martin Bandier. “With this new master’s program, we’re taking it to the next level, shaping future music leaders who are equipped, connected and ready to make their mark.”

Launching in fall 2025, the Bandier music business master’s program will provide a multidisciplinary education designed to prepare students for their initial roles in the music industry. The curriculum will cover fundamental rights, royalties, deal-making approaches across various sectors including label, publishing, management, streaming, live events, and all genres.

Core instruction will encompass subjects such as music law and copyright alongside current social media and data tools utilized by leading companies today. Students will also have an opportunity to spend a semester in Los Angeles to gain practical experience within the heart of the music industry.

Bill Werde will oversee the new master’s program while continuing his role as director of the Bandier undergraduate program. Prior to joining Newhouse School, Werde served as editorial director of Billboard where he led the publication to win several awards including a 2010 Ellie Award for Digital Media from the American Society of Magazine Editors.

“Breaking into the music industry can be daunting. If you have great instincts and passion for what fans love in music and how those tastes evolve, the new music business master’s program will give you all the access, skills and network you need for an incredibly fulfilling career in the music industry,” Werde stated. “The Bandier program will open doors for students for the rest of their lives.”

Newhouse Dean Mark J. Lodato commented on this development: “The program presents a fantastic opportunity for college graduates to acquire dynamic skills and gain hands-on experiences that will help them succeed in the thriving music business.” He added that Syracuse University is "eternally grateful" for Marty Bandier's support and enthusiasm which enables Newhouse School to provide first-class education for aspiring professionals in recording and entertainment industries.
