As new students prepare to arrive at Syracuse University next week, many are contemplating what essentials to bring to campus. SU News consulted upperclass students Ryan Nkongnyu ’25, a communication and rhetorical studies major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, and Ryann Washington ’25, a biology and forensic science student in the College of Arts and Sciences, for their insights on must-have items, unnecessary items, and other advice.

When asked about essential items for campus life, Nkongnyu listed his laptop, notebook/journal, Crocs, headphones, bookbag, and pens. Washington emphasized the importance of an umbrella, silicone ice cube tray, Velcro strips, toolbox (crucial for move-in day), command hooks, chip clips, mini fan (for initial semester heat), insurance card, small first aid kit, Ziploc bags, shower shoes and caddy. She also recommended bringing emergency medications and Vitamin C packets due to the prevalence of illness during the first few weeks. Additionally, she mentioned that a decent-sized trash can is key.

Regarding overrated items that can be left at home, Nkongnyu advised sticking to basics without overpacking. Washington pointed out that personal printers are often unnecessary given the availability of numerous printers on campus.

Both students shared their favorite study spots on campus. Nkongnyu preferred Barner McDuffie House as one of his hidden study locations. Washington favored the third floor of Schine for its serene environment and excellent view conducive to focused study sessions.

Offering advice to their younger selves starting at Syracuse University, Nkongnyu encouraged following one's spirit: "If you seek it and work toward it you will make your dream a reality." He added that destiny can only be delayed but never denied. Washington advised being compassionate and patient with oneself during college transitions: "One disappointing grade doesn’t define your entire experience—allow yourself grace."
