Mayor Walsh appoints Joseph Tifft as lead project coordinator

On May 10, 2024, Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced the appointment of Joseph Tifft as Lead Project Coordinator in the Department of Neighborhood and Business Development (NBD). In his new role, Tifft will be responsible for the implementation and management of the City’s Lead Grant Program. His duties will include assisting residents and property owners in accessing available program funds and representing the City in negotiations with potential funding partners to reduce lead hazards in city homes that house young children.

Tifft brings a wealth of experience to this position. Prior to his appointment, he worked in environmental compliance monitoring where he utilized his knowledge and legal background to interpret and apply complex regulations for hazardous materials. His previous roles include Building Inspector for Asbestos and Environmental Consulting Company (AECC) Group, Air Sampling Technician for Churchill Environmental, and Legal Intern for both the Oswego County District Attorney’s Office and Hiscock Legal Aid Society. Additionally, Tifft has experience working in public relations.

In terms of qualifications, Tifft holds various state and federal certifications. These include Lead Risk Assessor and Lead Paint Inspector from the Environmental Protection Agency as well as Project Monitor and Asbestos Building Inspector from New York State. He has also completed hazardous waste and construction safety trainings from Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
