Marina Artuso and Qinru Qiu have been named Distinguished Professors at Syracuse University, a prestigious title recognizing their outstanding contributions to teaching and research. The Board of Trustees recently approved this distinction, highlighting the impact that both professors have had on the academic mission of the university.
Vice Chancellor, Provost, and Chief Academic Officer Gretchen Ritter praised the honorees, stating, “This well-deserved honor acknowledges the groundbreaking work and professional contributions of Professors Artuso and Qiu and, at the same time, honors them for their tremendous impact on the University and our students.”
Marina Artuso, a renowned expert in experimental particle physics, has been instrumental in the Large Hadron Collider “b” (LHCb) experiment at the CERN laboratory in Geneva. Her work challenges the existing understanding of particle physics and has led to the development of advanced detectors. Colleagues have lauded Artuso for her expertise, with CERN researcher Monica Pepe Altarelli describing her as “one of the world’s most experienced and recognized experts in experimental flavor physics.”
Qinru Qiu, on the other hand, is a leader in energy-efficient computing and has made significant contributions to the field. Her research on neuromorphic computing has opened new possibilities for AI operations in an energy-efficient manner. Colleagues have commended Qiu for her innovative work and dedication to the field, with Vijay Narayanan, associate dean for innovation at Penn State College of Engineering, praising her as a “leader in the realm of computing systems and energy efficiency.”
Both Artuso and Qiu have impressive academic backgrounds, with Artuso holding a Ph.D. in physics from Northwestern University and Qiu earning a master’s degree in computer engineering and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California. Artuso joined the Syracuse faculty in 1991, while Qiu became a part of the university in 2011.
The appointments of Marina Artuso and Qinru Qiu as Distinguished Professors at Syracuse University underscore their significant contributions to their respective fields and the university community as a whole.
