The Department of Public Safety’s new substation at 101 Marshall Street is set to celebrate its grand opening on Friday, March 29, inviting the campus community to join the festivities. According to Craig Stone, DPS chief and associate vice president, this new space will allow DPS to enhance coverage in an area serving not only the campus community but also visitors and alumni. Stone expressed his excitement for greater engagement with the campus community, stating, "I am looking forward to greater engagement with our campus community and welcoming students, faculty and staff to our new space on Friday."
In addition to tours and conversations with DPS officials about safety strategies and available resources, DPS will be offering $20 food vouchers to the first 44 students who attend the event with the Orange Safe app downloaded. The substation's hours of operation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, with extended hours on Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. It will be closed on Sundays.
The establishment of the substation at the corner of Marshall Street and South Crouse Avenue was initiated by the University last year. With the conversion of the Sheraton Hotel and 727 Crouse into student housing, expanding DPS's presence in the area became essential to provide a visible presence for the campus community. Marshall Street, being one of the highest-traffic areas surrounding the campus, attracts many visitors and alumni with its numerous restaurants, bars, and shops.
DPS plays a crucial role in providing round-the-clock protection to the Syracuse University campus. By engaging in patrol and crime prevention efforts, DPS collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to address and eliminate crime hazards and risks within the campus community.
