St. Joseph’s Health Hospital in Syracuse, New York, has been recognized for the sixth consecutive year by the Mitral Foundation for its excellence in mitral valve repair. The hospital received the Mitral Valve Repair Reference Center Award, which highlights its commitment to high-quality care and adherence to best practices in degenerative mitral valve surgery.

Dr. Charles Lutz, chair of cardiac surgery at St. Joseph’s Health, expressed pride in receiving the award again. “Receiving the Mitral Valve Repair Reference Center Award again is a testament to the exceptional skill, collaboration, and commitment of our entire heart team at St. Joseph’s Health Hospital,” he said.

The award identifies U.S. medical centers that follow evidence-based treatment guidelines and are committed to reporting and measuring quality and outcome metrics specific to mitral valve repairs. David H. Adams, MD, President of the Mitral Foundation, noted that award recipients must meet rigorous outcomes criteria for repair rates, mortality, and durability.

Robert O. Bonow, MD from Northwestern University praised St. Joseph’s Health Hospital for its dedication to patients with degenerative mitral valve disease: “Choosing the right hospital for heart surgery is one of the most important health care decisions made by patients and their referring physicians.”

Mitral valve reconstruction is recommended over replacement due to improved survival rates and fewer long-term complications.
