Ryan Blackwell, a former standout for Syracuse men’s basketball, has rejoined the program as director of player engagement, according to an April 15 announcement. Blackwell previously spent two years as an assistant coach on Gerry McNamara’s staff at Siena College.
In his new role, Blackwell will be responsible for connecting the program with its alumni and former student-athletes. He is tasked with developing and supporting a comprehensive alumni and donor engagement strategy in coordination with athletics development staff. His duties include planning mentorship and networking events, organizing alumni weekends, and overseeing on-campus activities that align with institutional guidelines and reinforce the program’s brand.
Blackwell had a notable playing career that began at Pittsford-Sutherland High School in New York, where he set school records in points and rebounds before earning multiple honors including High School All-American. After one season at Illinois, he transferred to Syracuse where he started all 100 games over three seasons under Coach Jim Boeheim. He scored 1,175 points during his collegiate career and was named third team All-BIG EAST Conference as a senior.
Following graduation in 2000 with a degree in child and family studies, Blackwell played professionally overseas for ten years before starting his coaching career in Japan. He later coached high school basketball at Liverpool High School in New York, leading the team to a state championship and five sectional titles.
At Siena College, Blackwell contributed to significant improvements within the program including a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance. The Saints ranked among Division I leaders in scoring defense during his tenure.
Blackwell is married to Keito Blackwell; they have one daughter named LoElle.
