The firm salazarsequeromedina, co-founded by School of Architecture faculty member Pablo Sequero, has been announced as a winner of the biennial 2025 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers. This prize, recognized as one of North America’s most prestigious awards for young architectural practitioners, featured the theme “Plot” for this year’s competition. Entrants were tasked with exploring the concept of plot as it relates to architecture, inviting them to unveil the narratives shaping their creations.

The competition’s jurors included Behnaz Assadi, Mario Gooden, Jia Yi Gu, and William O’Brien Jr., alongside a rotating committee of past winners on the Young Architects + Designers Committee, consisting this year of Rayshad Dorsey, Liz Gálvez, and Miles Gertler. The committee’s prompt suggested that while architects aim to craft their stories, unexpected developments in projects resemble plot twists, urging young designers to highlight the pervasive role of plot in their work.

Reflecting on the significance of this achievement, Michael Speaks, dean of the School of Architecture, stated: “Congratulations to Pablo and his firm on this remarkable accomplishment. The exceptionally talented designers and educators at salazarsequeromedina are at the forefront of contemporary architecture. Their innovative approach blends civic engagement, sustainability and repurposed materials to create projects that bridge cultural, environmental and social contexts.”

The award-winning firm, salazarsequeromedina, was established in 2020 by Laura Salazar, Pablo Sequero, and Juan Medina. Their collaborative architecture practice, operating in Peru, Spain, South Korea, and the U.S., centers on public projects that resonate with diverse communities and geographical contexts. With a focus on reducing environmental impact, the practice employs open-ended structures and considers the flexibility of building functions to align architectural endeavors with contemporary challenges.

For 2025, thematic programming based on the League Prize will be presented through a hybrid onsite and online model. This includes a three-part online lecture series, with the first session set for June 11, featuring presentations from salazarsequeromedina and other winners, necessitating prior registration. Additionally, the winners will produce installations either locally or in digital formats, which will be showcased on archleague.org.

The League Prize competition, now in its 44th cycle, offers architects and designers within ten years of completing their degree an opportunity to make a notable stride in their careers. The Architectural League remains committed to supporting emerging talent in the field.

salazarsequeromedina’s versatile work has earned critical recognition, previously being shortlisted for the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize and as finalists at various biennials and festivals such as the XIII Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism.
