Memorial Day holds special importance in New York, with its origins linked to Waterloo in 1866. Initially called “Decoration Day” after the Civil War, it has evolved into a national holiday honoring the sacrifices of fallen heroes.
New York continues its tradition of paying tribute to the armed forces with various events across the region. In Central New York, several activities are planned for those who wish to participate. The Memorial Day parade in Fulton is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, followed by a watchfire at 7 p.m. at the Fulton War Memorial.
Additionally, displays and exhibits will be available outside Weedsport Junior-Senior High School on Memorial Day for visitors who prefer walking or driving through. More local event listings can be found for Cayuga, Oswego, and Jefferson counties.
These events serve as opportunities to reflect on the legacy of fallen warriors and inspire individuals to become better participants in democracy and community life.
The spirit of Memorial Day encourages people to enjoy time with family and friends while remembering that freedom comes at a cost paid by brave soldiers deserving admiration and respect.
