Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has announced the expansion of Surge Link, the municipal broadband service, which will now be available to over 9,200 additional households in Syracuse. This project is part of a $15 million investment by the city aimed at increasing access to affordable home internet in neighborhoods with limited high-speed internet options.
The Surge Link service, initially piloted in October 2023 on the city’s southwest side, is now expanding to include Valley, Skunk City, Washington Square, Northside, Prospect Hill, and Hawley-Green. These areas were chosen due to their lower broadband usage rates and higher poverty and unemployment levels. The expansion is supported by a $10.8 million grant from Governor Kathy Hochul’s ConnectALL Municipal Infrastructure Program.
Mayor Walsh stated, “Access to reliable, affordable broadband is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity for education, healthcare, employment, and civic participation.” Empire State Development President Hope Knight added that this initiative exemplifies an innovative approach to economic development and thanked Governor Hochul for her support.
The City of Syracuse collaborates with Community Broadband Networks LLC to provide affordable internet services. The service offers 100 Mbps symmetric service at $14.99 per month for low-income households and $36.99 for others. It includes professional setup with all necessary equipment provided without additional fees or contracts.
James Orioli from CBN America LLC emphasized that this expansion brings more than just internet access; it offers opportunity and connection throughout Syracuse.
Surge Link is part of the broader Syracuse Surge strategy initiated by Mayor Walsh in 2019 to foster inclusive growth through tech jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities.
