The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs has appointed four faculty members as O’Hanley Faculty Scholars. The newly named scholars are Brian Brege, Sarah Hamersma, Yüksel Sezgin, and Ying Shi. Each will hold the title for a three-year term starting July 1, 2025, with financial support to enhance their teaching and research.
The O’Hanley Endowed Fund for Faculty Excellence was established by Ron O’Hanley, chairman and CEO of State Street Global Advisors and a Maxwell alumnus. “We are grateful to Mr. O’Hanley for establishing this fund to support faculty excellence,” said Carol Faulkner, senior associate dean for academic affairs and professor of history.
Brian Brege is an associate professor of history specializing in early modern Europe’s global interactions. His work includes the book “Tuscany in the Age of Empire,” which won a prize from the American Association for Italian Studies.
Sarah Hamersma focuses on anti-poverty programs and public health as an associate professor of public administration and international affairs. Her research has been supported by organizations like the William T. Grant Foundation.
Yüksel Sezgin, an associate professor of political science, specializes in comparative religious family laws. His book “Human Rights under State‑Enforced Religious Family Laws in Israel, Egypt, and India” received the Gordon Hirabayashi Human Rights Book Prize.
Ying Shi examines racial inequality and education policy as an associate professor of public administration and international affairs. She was recently awarded a $350,000 grant to study Asian American students’ experiences with victimization in schools.
