Syracuse Mayor Walsh has officially opened the Kirk Park Canoe and Kayak Boat Launch. The opening ceremony took place on May 21 at the launch site located at the end of the Creekwalk near Hunt Avenue. This new facility will serve as one of three important access points for kayaking and canoeing enthusiasts on Onondaga Creek.

The Department of Engineering completed this project, which included significant improvements to the overlook area. These enhancements feature an American Disability Act (ADA) compliant launch ramp and updated safety measures such as new safety rails, a lockable gate, and signage designed to improve visibility and security. Additionally, a stilling basin was constructed to ensure safe entry and exit from the creek.

Mayor Walsh expressed his commitment to enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities in Syracuse by stating, “We are committed to enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Syracuse.” He further emphasized that “The Kirk Park Boat Launch not only increases access to our waterways but also highlights the natural beauty of Onondaga Creek as a valuable community resource.”

This initiative is part of Syracuse’s ongoing efforts to develop outdoor recreational spaces and strengthen connections between residents and local natural resources. The Kirk Park launch complements existing paddling access points along Onondaga Creek, contributing to a more comprehensive network for water recreation.
