President Trump recently signed an executive order that aims to enhance educational opportunities related to artificial intelligence. The order establishes a task force dedicated to promoting AI-related education and tools in classrooms.
Dr. Jing Lei, a professor at Syracuse University’s School of Education, emphasizes the importance of integrating AI into K-12 education. “Many other countries have started integrating AI into their K-12 education systems several years ago,” Lei notes, citing examples from South Korea and Japan.
Organizations like UNESCO have published guidelines on incorporating AI in education. In 2023, UNESCO released “Guidance for Generative AI in Education and Research,” focusing on a human-centered approach. Additionally, in August 2024, they published “AI Competency Frameworks for Students and Teachers” outlining necessary skills for engaging with AI technologies.
Dr. Lei suggests educators explore various AI tools beyond popular large language models such as ChatGPT. These tools can assist teachers and school administrators with tasks ranging from teaching to daily management activities.
School districts should also provide guidance on ethical guidelines regarding AI use, data protection regulations, and ensuring equitable access to these technologies within classrooms.
AI’s role extends beyond being a tool; it acts as both curriculum and learning environment assistant. Dr. Lei stresses the need for schools to consider the rapidly evolving nature of AI when adopting these technologies.
For teachers, working alongside AI can lead to personalized education by allowing technology to handle routine tasks while educators focus on more creative aspects of teaching. This partnership enables immediate feedback on student performance and supports students’ individual learning paces while allowing teachers to offer emotional support and build connections with students.
