FOIA Request to SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry regarding Chinese National students on June 16, 2025.

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted by the Syracuse Sun to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry on June 16, 2025. The request seeks information about Chinese National students currently enrolled at the university. The FOIA request is made under the New York Freedom of Information Law, N.Y. Pub. Off. Law sec. 84 et seq., with a preference for receiving the information in electronic format.

The request outlines four specific inquiries:

1. A list or document detailing all current students who are Chinese Nationals, including their respective departments of study. If this information is protected, a total number of such students broken down by department is requested.

2. Documents or lists showing all current Chinese National students along with details of each scholarship they receive and the source of these scholarships.

3. Information on recipients of any scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council, if not already included in response to the second request.

4. Policies or procedures that describe how the university monitors its students, including Chinese Nationals, to protect intellectual property and other confidential information.

The Syracuse Sun has requested a fee waiver based on its role as a media organization committed to gathering and reporting news to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency to the public.

The requestor is associated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to investigating governmental agencies through Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws.

Our team will continue to keep you updated as we gather and report news related to this request and other matters of public interest. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further clarification regarding this matter.
