Students from the Utica City School District recently visited Syracuse University as part of a collaborative event with a Falk College Sport Management class. The initiative, developed over two months under Sport Management Assistant Teaching Professor Alexia Lopes, Ph.D., involved working alongside the Integrated Community Alternatives Network (ICAN).
The event, held on April 18, introduced middle and high school students from Utica to higher education opportunities and highlighted programs available at the Falk College. Syracuse University student-athletes participated in a panel discussion, sharing the realities of participating in collegiate sports. The day underscored the role of sports in fostering social change and empowering local youth.
More than 25 students enjoyed various activities on campus, including lunch, games, and tours. A photo opportunity with Syracuse University’s mascot, Otto the Orange, was also part of the day’s agenda. The efforts of sport management majors Cooper Feldstein and James Tait were central to planning the successful event.
ICAN, based in Utica, supports Utica City School District students by offering comprehensive services, including behavioral and mental health support in special education settings.
Reflecting on the project, Feldstein shared, “We spent months working with Dr. Lopes to make this event a success. I’m also incredibly thankful for (ICAN Director) Jesenia Wright for her inspiring work and tireless effort in bringing this vision to life. This event was so special, and I’m excited to see how this partnership grows in the future.”
