Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud was recognized as the Distinguished Citizen of the Year by Scouting America, Longhouse Council. The award was presented during the organization’s 57th annual ScoutPower dinner, a major fundraising event that raised nearly $600,000 for programs designed to build character and teach responsibility among youth through scouting.

Chancellor Syverud, originally from Irondequoit, New York, has been deeply involved in scouting throughout his life. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and previously served on the board of the Longhouse Council. Alongside his wife, Dr. Ruth Chen, they have three sons—Steven, Brian, and David—who also participated in scouting activities.

“I am honored to be named the Distinguished Citizen of the Year by Scouting America,” Chancellor Syverud stated. “Scouting has been a meaningful part of my life for as long as I can remember—first as a scout and now as a member of the Longhouse Council. I’m grateful for the friendships, bonds and connections I’ve made, and I appreciate everyone who supports Scouting America and encourages young people to participate in scouting programs.”

The event featured NBC sports commentator Mike Tirico ’88 as the keynote speaker. Tirico is an alumnus of Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and College of Arts and Sciences. His career includes coverage of “Sunday Night Football,” the Olympics, and other major sports events.

Syracuse University sponsored this year’s event along with JMA Wireless. Joanie Mahoney ’87, L’90, President of SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry—and herself a former Distinguished Citizen honoree—served as this year’s event chair.
