Carey Smith, an alumna from Syracuse University’s Engineering and Computer Science program, has had a notable career transition from engineering at IBM to holding top executive positions in major corporations like Parsons Corporation. Initially working as a systems engineer, Smith’s involvement with avionics system engineering and software development helped cultivate her leadership ambitions.

Smith reflected, “Engineering gives you a background,” enabling an inquisitive approach driven by technical understanding. Her management journey began at IBM, progressing through companies like Loral Corporation, Lockheed Martin, and Honeywell. In 2016, she joined Parsons and was eventually appointed Chair, President, and CEO, leading the company’s shift towards being an advanced technology leader in national security and infrastructure.

Smith focused Parsons on high-growth sectors, emphasizing technological innovation and digital solutions. Under her leadership, the company acquired 14 technology-centric firms, enhancing its capabilities in sectors like cyber intelligence and urban development. According to Smith, “I have tried to look at our customer’s emerging challenges and define solutions to meet their needs.”

Smith stressed the company’s integral role in offering coordinated services against cyber threats, particularly in critical sectors such as transportation and health care, highlighting a blend of domain understanding and cybersecurity capabilities. Since becoming CEO, Parsons has achieved impressive growth, attributed to a mix of strategic acquisitions and Smith’s emphasis on innovation and human capital, noting, “I wanted to create a person first culture.”

With a background in engineering and management, Smith encourages new engineers to gain experience on both the technical and business fronts for comprehensive career development. She acknowledges Syracuse University’s role in shaping her career, saying, “I’m always proud to be a Syracuse alum. It is a wonderful university.”
