In a recent development that has sparked considerable attention, a biotechnology company has announced the successful recreation of the extinct dire wolf using genetic engineering. This claim has raised questions about the concept of “de-extinction” and the ethical implications of such breakthroughs.
Samuel Gorovitz, a prominent Syracuse University professor and expert in bioethics, weighs in on the matter. According to Gorovitz, even if the animal is genetically similar to the dire wolf, it does not equate to a true revival of the species. “Only adult dire wolves can raise an authentic dire wolf, and there aren’t any of those. All talk of ‘de-extinction’ is metaphorical and often misleading,” he states. Despite these observations, Gorovitz acknowledges that the company’s adherence to ethical guidelines in this initiative is commendable.
While Gorovitz notes that the company’s techniques are improving and contributing to the understanding of genetic manipulation, he emphasizes that their work is unlikely to result in significant ecological disruptions. “It’s unlikely that any of their work will lead to a ‘rewilding’ that repopulates an ecosystem with significant numbers of newly devised creatures. The obstacles to that are numerous and clear. There’s not likely any ecological risk from what they are doing,” he adds.
