Hannah Kang, a student at Syracuse University, reflects on her journey as she prepares to graduate with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. Born in South Korea and raised in Houston, Texas, Kang was inspired by an internship under architect Jesse Hager and her mother’s background in architecture. Her search for top architecture schools led her to Syracuse University’s School of Architecture.
Kang chose to fund her education through the Army ROTC program, influenced by her father’s experience in the military. “He encouraged me to look into the Army ROTC [Reserve Officers’ Training Corps] pathway,” she says. Balancing the demands of both architecture and ROTC programs posed challenges, but Kang managed to integrate them successfully.
Study abroad opportunities expanded Kang’s perspective. She spent time studying in London and New York City, where she also interned with URBN and Whole Foods Market. These experiences helped shape her career aspirations within architecture.
Looking forward, Kang aims to secure a full-time position with an architecture or design firm while considering further education for a master’s degree. She plans to join the ROTC Alumni Association and serve as a finance officer in the New York National Guard.
Reflecting on her time at Syracuse University, Kang recalls moments that exemplified school spirit and pride: “A big part of what drew me to Syracuse was the school spirit.”
