Alonna Berry, a 2011 graduate of Syracuse University and executive director of the Delaware Center for Justice, has assumed the role of president of the Syracuse University Alumni Association (SUAA) Board of Directors as of July 1, 2025. Berry will also serve on the University’s Board of Trustees.

“Stepping into this leadership role is a profound honor and a timely responsibility,” Berry stated. “Right now, colleges and universities across the country are grappling with how best to support students, and alumni feedback is a critical part of that decision-making process. I see this moment as an opportunity to meet the times with integrity and intention.”

Berry takes over from Peter Gianesini, who completed his two-year term and will continue as past president. Under Gianesini’s leadership, several initiatives were launched including the Ask Orange Alumni tool and changes to the annual Alumni Awards Celebration which increased participation.

In her professional capacity, Berry leads a nonprofit organization focused on equity and justice in Delaware. Her experience spans over 15 years in education, policy, and nonprofit management.

As a student at Syracuse, Berry was involved in various activities such as serving as a Remembrance Scholar and being part of the Black Celestial Choral Ensemble.

“In this moment, intentional communication and transparency are more important than ever,” said Berry about her priorities for alumni engagement. “That begins with listening. Together with my fellow SUAA Board members, we’re focused on being present—whether that’s on campus, at regional gatherings or in virtual spaces—so we can truly understand and reflect the needs of our alumni community.”

The SUAA Board works to maintain connections among alumni, former students, parents, students, and friends with Syracuse University.

Katie Walpole will serve as vice president and president-elect of the board. She has academic credentials from both the London School of Economics and Syracuse University’s Maxwell School.

Berry lives in Sussex County, Delaware with her family and is affiliated with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
