Syracuse University Libraries are set to showcase their extensive collection of materials related to the history of plastic in an upcoming Earth Day event. The library holds a significant number of archival collections that shed light on the rise of plastics in the 20th century.
The exhibit, titled "Plasticized: The Proliferation of Plastics in the 20th Century," features a diverse range of materials that document the impact of plastics on American society. Courtney Hicks, the SCRC lead curator and curator of plastics and historical artifacts, emphasized the importance of these materials in understanding the historical significance of plastics.
According to Hicks, the exhibit includes papers from key innovators in the plastics industry such as John Wesley Hyatt, Irvin Rubin, Viscoloid Company, and Foster Grant. The collection also comprises prototypes, photographs, audio recordings, film, advertisements, and blueprints that offer valuable insights for interdisciplinary research.
Hicks expressed excitement about the upcoming panel discussion and reception scheduled for Earth Day, where attendees will have the opportunity to delve into the fascinating facts uncovered from the historical documents and artifact displays.
The event aims to raise awareness about the proliferation of plastics in the 20th century and their enduring impact on various aspects of society. Through this exhibition, Syracuse University Libraries seek to educate and engage the public on the complex history and significance of plastics.
